This work originated from a random comment over the phone– I told my dad I would paint him a penguin. I often question why there is such a distinction of “high” or “low” art, especially given my recent tendency towards more conceptual work. Although the artwork does not touch on notions of human nature or critique arbitrary systems of social order, or even cause the viewer to rethink a preconceived belief, I was able to bring a smile to my father’s face.
