Gazing through the Lens of Perception
Project Type
Oil painting
Date
2024
Description
The oil painting presents nine sets of horizontal and vertical glasses, with different people peering through them. One set of glasses in the middle disrupts the color scheme, and this pair of eyes is the only one looking directly at the viewer, confronting the passivity with which art is often consumed and objectified. This idea draws inspiration from the 20th-century philosopher Martin Heidegger. Although the 'thingliness' of an object is ever-present, Heidegger argues that art participates in 'unconcealment'—it has a quality of revealing and a being that distinguishes it from a mere object. In this work, I aim to emulate these notions by presenting art not simply as an object to be passively viewed, but as an active participant in the act of revealing the elusive nature of perception.
